Space Humanities Seminar

13 April 2023 15:15 to 17:00 Seminar

Welcome to Space Humanities Seminar: "One Health Design for Human Wellbeing in Spaceflight" Maya V. Mishra, Princeton University, USA April 13, 15:15–17:00 LUX:C327 Or LU Zoom meeting: https://lu-se.zoom.us/j/67922685652

Nowhere is human health more intimately linked with that of the environment than aboard a spacecraft. Most obviously, humans are affected by the lack of gravity and the increased radiation in space, exhibiting alterations in nearly every aspect of the body. However, astronauts’ wellbeing also depends on the many different systems within and surrounding the vehicle. For instance, the antimicrobial capacity of various surfaces may affect the risk of infection, while the built environment of the spacecraft and the structure of work schedules can affect mental health. This connection between health and environment has long been recognized through the framework of One Health. On Earth, One Health advocates for the promotion of human health alongside that of animals and the environment, highlighting the inextricable links between the three. This framework can be applied to address current and future mental and physical health challenges as humans venture farther beyond Earth. Possible avenues for exploration include the integration of beneficial microbes and phototrophs with the spacecraft environment for food, medicine, and beauty, as well as the creation of areas that foster community within the crew while still maximizing available space in the vehicle. Collaboration between engineers, astronauts, medical professionals, artists, and natural scientists in the design of future missions will be critical to ensuring a continued healthy human presence in space.
