Tutorial: Electromagnetic Articulography (EMA): An introduction

1 June 2023 10:00 to 16:00 Other

Please register for the tutorial no later than May 15.

Electromagnetic articulography (EMA) is used to record and measure articulatory speech movements in 3D. It is a point-tracking system, where small sensors (receiver coils) are attached to the articulators we want to study, such as the lips, the tongue and the jaw, and the measurements are obtained by an electromagnetic field.

In this tutorial, participants will get an introduction to and some hands-on experience on

  • Preparing an EMA experiment (ethical considerations, sensor preparation, etc.)
  • Recording EMA data
  • Preprocessing recorded EMA data for further analysis
  • Visualisation and analysis of EMA data

There will also be time for questions related to participants’ present or future projects.

After this tutorial, participants will have some knowledge and experience of

  1. Planning, preparing and carrying out a simple EMA recording
  2. Some basic methods for analysis of EMA data
