Citizen Spies in Our Midst
A documentary history of the use of so-called confidential human sources by a national security service, Michael Schoenhals book "Eyes and Ears: Secret Agent Work in Cold War China" foregrunds the supremacy of access to evidence as the foundation of the historical discipline by exploring, translating, and analysing primary sources from 1947 to 1973.
The book documents operational tradecraft and capacity building, as well as the institutional resilience of covert human intelligence (HUMINT) when faced with revelations of misconduct and calls for its reform.
"Eyes and Ears: Secret Agent Work in Cold War China" is published by Cambridge University Press, 2026.
