English language and linguistics research seminar: Sarah Mercer, University of Graz: Language teacher wellbeing: Dispelling myths, complexifying constructs, and setting an agenda.

2 May 2024 16:15 to 18:00 Seminar

Abstract:

Teacher wellbeing has finally been receiving increased recognition for its importance in effective teaching and learning; a process accelerated due to the experiences and after-effects of the pandemic. Yet, despite its importance, the construct has been subject to numerous misunderstandings in ways which have made it a target for criticism in research circles and beyond. In this talk, we will consider some of the key theoretical bases for understanding wellbeing, reflecting on how it has been used in research and problematising simplistic perspectives. I will report on a number of studies carried out by the research team in Graz focusing on language teacher wellbeing in diverse contexts, the factors affecting wellbeing, and how these factors vary with years of teaching experience and across different life phases. In the process, I hope to dispel some myths about what language teacher wellbeing is and highlight why it matters so much for good practice. The talk will conclude with a discussion of possible avenues for further research to ensure teacher wellbeing continues to receive the attention by researchers, policy makers, educational leadership, society as a whole, and teachers themselves.
