Course 7.5 credits • CTRB58
How does religion shape society – and how is religion shaped by politics, culture, and history? In this course, you will explore these questions in one of the world’s most fascinating cities: Istanbul.
Istanbul is a place where East meets West, Christianity meets Islam, and secular ideals meet religious traditions. This course focuses on interreligious relations in Istanbul– how different religions interact, clash, or cooperate in Turkish society. You will study how Christianity and Islam have influenced politics, both historically and today. You will also learn about the challenges faced by religious minorities, and how religion can either reinforce or challenge racism and ethnic tensions.
The course is ideal for students interested in the role of religion in society, both in history and the present time.
