What characterises experiences of culture shock? How is intercultural communication related to the classroom, the workplace, friendship, tourism and conflicts? How is intercultural communicative competence developed?
This introductory course covers important concepts and topics related to intercultural communication, with a particular focus on language use and the development of intercultural communication competence. You will explore topics such as: What is cultural identity? What characterises experiences of culture shock? How is intercultural communication related to different areas such as the classroom, the workplace, friendship, tourism, conflicts and global citizenship? What can act as obstacles or facilitating factors for the development of intercultural communicative competence?
You will work with theoretical concepts, analyses, critical reflection and the formation of intercultural practices. Together with fellow students, you will identify and discuss problems that may arise in intercultural interaction in specific contexts. You will also critically reflect on intercultural interaction and cultural identities, including your own.
