Can human rights be justified across cultural boundaries? Are there rights that should apply to all people, regardless of context? This course is ideal for you who are interested in philosophy, ethics, political science, law, and international relations.
This course provides an introduction to philosophical perspectives on human rights. You will gain a historical overview of theories of human rights and how they have been justified throughout history. You will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of different philosophical approaches and explore key theories, principles, and debates that have shaped our understanding of human rights. The course examines questions such as: What are human rights? Who holds them? And why are they considered legitimate? You will also acquire analytical tools to critically assess and engage in debates on human rights.
