This course explores today’s Ukrainian society from political, cultural, and identity perspectives, set against a clear historical background. You’ll learn how Ukrainian culture and identity developed in the borderlands of the Russian, Habsburg, and Ottoman empires. The course pays special attention to state and nation-building in post-Soviet Ukraine since 1991 and examines the regional context. A key focus is understanding the factors that led to Russia’s war against Ukraine.
