Course
Course 15 credits • YIDC01
Discover Sholem Aleichem’s stories and how his humour, language, and characters reflect a Jewish culture in transition – from Tsarist Russia to modern America. By analysing his works, you’ll gain tools to understand how literature can shape cultural identity in times of unrest.
In this course, you will study the works of Sholem Aleichem, one of the most influential Jewish writers of the early 20th century. Through works like "Tevye the Dairyman", "Railway Stories", and "Menakhem Mendel", you’ll learn how literature reflected and influenced Jewish life during a time of crisis and change. You’ll also examine how Sholem Aleichem’s move to the United States affected his writing and contributed to Jewish theatre and film. By the end of the course, you’ll understand how his unique storytelling helped shape modern Jewish culture in both Russia and America.
