Course
Course 7.5 credits • SEMN02
Cognitive semiotics is a synthesis of semiotics and cognitive science, giving new insights into human and animal meaning-making and consciousness, bridging gaps between sciences and humanities. The course will introduce you to this exciting discipline and show you how to use it in your own research.
The course will make you familiar with key topics and methods in cognitive semiotics, such as the conceptual-empirical loop, and how to triangulate between first-person, second-person and third-person methods. Through reading and discussing both theoretical and empirical oriented texts, you will gain an understanding of a number of central theoretical concepts like intentionality, semiosis, iconicity, signs and signals, semiotic systems, polysemiosis, multimodality. Further, the course will show you how to conduct cognitive semiotic research yourself.
