The course critically reflects on participation as practices that evolve within media, social and cultural environments. We bring historical, social, political and cultural perspectives together as a way of understanding participation as a process of change.
The course structure includes an historical approach where we understand the development of audiences and publics within the context of the growth of media and popular culture. Key lectures examine citizenship and participation within the broader framework of the media and democracy.
The course also considers the individual, audience and public as an agent of change, engaged in dynamic practices related to consumption, live events and social networking in popular culture.
