Digital philology: When ancient text meets modern tech

19 november 2025 12:15 till 12:45 Föreläsning

The field of classical philology is progressing at a rate unseen since the renaissance. Old problems that until just two or three years ago seemed hopelessly intractable are well on their way to being solved.

Fascinating research on the unrolling of the burned scrolls of Herculaneum, and automatic filling in of textual lacunae in inscriptions and papyri have recently adorned the coveted front pages of Nature.

In this presentation Albin Thörn Cleland and Rasmus Bro Clemmensen, both PhD students in Ancient Greek at LU and members of the national research school in digital philology DigPhil, will demonstrate how to apply digital tools to ancient texts. They will use examples from their own research ranging from extracting lost melodies from 2500-year-old songs to systematically mapping hitherto overlooked conceptual connections in ancient philosophy.

Feel free to bring a sandwich and come and get inspired by exciting new methods and learn how to apply them to your own projects!

During the autumn, students and staff have the opportunity to listen to exciting short presentations on various topics in "Läsesalen" (adjacent to the foyer) at LUX.
